Many lubricants are related to the two concepts of anti-wear and extrusion, such as gear oils. Lubricating oil's anti-wear properties and extreme pressure properties are different. Anti-wear properties (AW) refers to the ability of lubricating oil/grease to avoid metal wear due to friction when friction occurs between metals. The commonly used test standard for the anti-wear properties of lubricating oil is ASTM D4172 (grease is ASTM D2266). The test result is the size of the wear scar. The smaller the diameter, the better.
Extreme pressure (EP) of lubricating oil refers to the load-bearing capacity of lubricating oil/grease when subjected to a heavy load and boundary lubrication occurs. Common testing standards for the extreme pressure of lubricants include Timken EP Test, including ASTM D2782 (lubricating oil) and ASTM D2509 (lubricating grease). There is also Four-Ball EP Test, including ASTM D2783 (lubricating oil) and ASTM D2596 (lubricating grease). In addition, in addition to these two testing methods, there is a special testing standard for the extreme pressure of gear oil, which is the FZG test (ie ASTM D5182).
From the test standards, we can see that there is a difference between the extreme pressure and anti-wear properties of lubricating oils. The extreme pressure properties of lubricating oils with good anti-wear properties are not necessarily good. Similarly, lubricating oils with good extreme pressure properties are not It must be good, we must look at the two standards separately.
